Startup Weekend random thoughts

As you probably know this weekend we had a Startup Weekend in Nicosia and it was quite good.

I personally got a lot of energy from the newcomers, sent a lot of hopefully helpful thoughts their way (ok I confused them) and had a chance to catch up with the ecosystem.

I don't have a main point i`d like to write about, so instead I am sharing a few things that I liked about the weekend, and a few things I liked less.

Before jumping in, a huge thank you to the organizers for doing a great job with the event

A lot of new people with good energy. The organizers have done a good job engaging universities and getting new people closer to the startup world

Not so much

The term startup is quite unclear. A lot of the pitches we get are from Small Businesses. Nothing bad with them – they are just not startups :)

As a startup ecosystem I think this is one of the points we haven't achieved the best result to date.

The advice you get at a startup weekend vary wildly – and that’s a great thing because it actually mirrors the real world. People don’t believe this, but even when talking to educated audiences like Investors you still get the same degree of variance.

The fact that there was beer available all day

The worship of the Business Model Canvas. It’s a good tool but I think it’s being worshipped and pushed too much in these weekend events – which is not really the startup way.

I think we should have a presentation about it, provide it to teams, but let the teams follow their own path to getting their answers. It's not school :)

How much the presentations improved in just 2 days. It’s really unreal how much better the presentations got in just a weekend, and it really shows the power of learning

The internet was decent – probably the best we have had at such an event

Not so much

The internet was still not good enough :)

The interaction in my presentation. People were really into it and instead of me stupidly presenting and people sleeping (which is the usual case) we had a nice open discussion about many topics that I think was beneficial
